Stop and read this first

  • Shut cooling off immediately when you see ice. Running a frozen system can destroy the compressor — a $1,500 to $3,500 repair.
  • Never chip ice off the coil. You will puncture it and convert a $400 repair into a $1,200 to $3,000 coil replacement.
  • Let the system thaw completely before restarting — typically two to four hours on fan-only mode.
  • Capacitors in the outdoor unit hold a lethal charge even with power off. Do not open the electrical compartment.

  1. Dirty or clogged air filter

    The fix
    Shut cooling off and run the fan only to thaw for two to four hours. Replace the filter before restarting cooling.
  2. Blocked or closed supply registers

    Open registers and clear return paths. Restricted airflow drops coil temperature below freezing and ice forms within 30 to 60 minutes.

    The fix

  4. Failed blower motor or weak airflow

  5. Dirty evaporator coil
