Furnace Short Cycling

A furnace that turns on and off every few minutes instead of running a full heating cycle — what causes it and what each fix costs.

Stop and read this first

  • If a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the building and call 911 from outside.
  • Do not bypass a limit switch or rollout switch to keep the furnace running.
  • Repeated short cycling overheats the heat exchanger and can crack it — address the cause promptly.
  • If you smell gas, leave immediately and call the utility emergency line from outside.

Work through these in order

Ordered from most to least likely. Working top down means you rule out the cheap, common causes before paying anyone to look at the expensive, rare ones.

  1. Clogged air filter restricting airflow

    CommonYou can check
    How to check
The furnace fires, runs two to five minutes, shuts off, and repeats. Hold the filter to a light — if you cannot see through it, it is loaded.
    The fix
Replace the filter. A restricted filter trips the high-limit switch on overheat, which is the single most common cause of short cycling on gas furnaces.
  2. Oversized furnace for the space

    CommonNeeds a pro
    How to check
The furnace heats the house quickly but shuts off before the thermostat satisfies. Common in homes where equipment was replaced without a load calculation.
    The fix
A technician confirms sizing with a Manual J calculation. Correct sizing may require a smaller furnace or duct modifications — not a filter change.
  3. Blocked or closed supply registers

    CommonYou can check
    How to check
More than 20% of supply registers are closed or blocked by furniture. Return grilles are obstructed.
    The fix
Open all supply registers and clear return paths. Closing too many registers increases static pressure and causes the furnace to overheat and trip the limit switch.
  4. Dirty flame sensor

    CommonNeeds a pro
    How to check
The burner lights, runs briefly, then shuts off after three to seven seconds before restarting.
    The fix
A technician cleans or replaces the flame rod. This is one of the least expensive furnace service calls — typically $100 to $200.
  5. Blocked condensate drain (high-efficiency furnace)

    CommonYou can check
    How to check
Water near the furnace base, or the inducer runs but ignition never begins on a 90%+ AFUE unit.
    The fix
Clear the condensate trap and drain line. A blocked trap trips the pressure switch and prevents the furnace from completing a cycle.
  6. Failing limit switch or flame rollout switch

    PossibleNeeds a pro
    How to check
Short cycling persists after a new filter. The furnace cabinet feels unusually hot.
    The fix
A technician tests and replaces the switch. If rollout switches trip repeatedly, inspect the heat exchanger for cracks — a carbon monoxide hazard.
  7. Thermostat wiring or placement issue

    PossibleNeeds a pro
    How to check
The thermostat is on an interior wall near a heat source, or was recently replaced.
    The fix
Verify wiring per the manufacturer diagram. A thermostat in a drafty or sun-exposed location causes premature satisfaction and short cycles.
  8. Cracked heat exchanger

    UncommonNeeds a pro
    How to check
Carbon monoxide alarm, visible flame disturbance when the blower starts, or soot around the burners.
    The fix
Shut the furnace off and ventilate. A cracked heat exchanger means replacement, not repair — typically $3,500 to $6,500 installed.

Once you know what it is

Step one

Know what it should cost

Get the range before you call, so the first number you hear is not the only number you have.

Step two

Decide repair or replace

On equipment near end of life, the repair is usually the first of several.

Step three

Check the quote

Compare against the typical range and confirm the terms before you sign.
