What you are actually paying for
Find the row that matches your situation. Quotes that differ wildly from each other usually differ in scope, not in price.

What moves the price
In descending order of impact. These are also the questions worth asking a contractor whose quote sits outside the range above.
Scope — walls, ceilings, trim
Walls-only is cheapest. Adding ceilings increases cost 30 to 50%. Trim, doors, and baseboards add significant labor per piece.
Surface condition
New drywall or pre-primed surfaces are fastest. Peeling paint, wallpaper removal, or stain blocking require prep that can double labor.
Number of coats and color change
One coat refresh on a similar color is cheapest. Dark-to-light or bold color changes need primer plus two coats.
Ceiling height and room complexity
Vaulted ceilings, stairwells, and rooms with many windows and doors add labor. A two-story great room costs more than standard 8-foot walls.
Paint quality
Contractor-grade paint is $25 to $40 per gallon. Premium paints (Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams) are $50 to $70. Better paint covers in fewer coats.
Can you do it yourself?
Interior painting is the most accessible home improvement DIY project. A 12×12 room takes 4 to 6 hours for an experienced painter. Whole-house painting is labor-intensive but achievable over a weekend per room. Prep (taping, patching, priming) determines the final quality.
Permits and inspection
When this cannot wait
- Preparing for sale — fresh paint is the highest-ROI pre-listing improvement
- Peeling or flaking paint creating a dust and appearance problem
