What moves the price
In descending order of impact. These are also the questions worth asking a contractor whose quote sits outside the range above.
Damage size and type
A nail hole or small crack is $100 to $200. A fist-sized hole runs $200 to $400. A large section from water damage or plumbing access runs $500 to $1,500.
Number of coats and finish level
A quick patch with one coat is cheapest. A Level 4 finish matching the surrounding wall requires three coats and sanding.
Texture matching
Matching orange peel, knockdown, or popcorn texture adds labor. Smooth walls are easiest to patch invisibly.
Painting
Painting the patched area to match is often a separate charge. Full wall painting after a large patch is recommended to hide color differences.
Underlying cause
Drywall damage from a leak requires fixing the leak first. Moldy drywall must be removed with proper containment.
Can you do it yourself?
Small to medium drywall patches are manageable DIY with a patch kit, joint compound, and sandpaper. Large repairs, texture matching, and ceiling work benefit from professional finishing. Fix the water source before patching.
Permits and inspection
When this cannot wait
- Water stain actively growing — source leak is ongoing
- Drywall crumbling or mold visible on the surface
- Hole exposing insulation or structure
