What moves the price

  1. Amperage requirement

    Most residential spas need a 50-amp, 240V circuit (two-pole GFCI breaker, 6 AWG copper). Smaller plug-and-play tubs use 120V/15A. Larger swim spas may need 60 or 80 amps.

  2. Distance from panel to tub

    Code requires a manual disconnect within sight of the tub, typically 5 to 15 feet away. Long conduit runs from the panel to the disconnect and from the disconnect to the tub add material and labor.

  3. Conduit and burial requirements

    Outdoor runs require UF cable or conduit — buried PVC at 18 inches or rigid metal. Trenches under patios or driveways add restoration cost.

  4. Panel capacity

    A 50-amp continuous load may require a panel upgrade on a 100A service. Run a load calculation before quoting the electrical work separately from the tub.

  5. Bonding and GFCI

    NEC 680 requires GFCI protection, equipotential bonding of metal within 5 feet of the tub, and specific clearance from overhead conductors.

Hot tub wiring involves 240V circuits, GFCI protection, bonding, and outdoor conduit work under NEC Article 680. Mistakes create electrocution risk in water. Every jurisdiction requires a licensed electrician and permit.

Permits and inspection

An electrical permit is required. The inspector verifies GFCI protection, bonding, disconnect location, conduit burial depth, and clearance requirements. The tub cannot be filled until the electrical inspection passes.
