What moves the price

  1. Panel capacity and distance

    A 40-amp or 48-amp Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240V circuit. If the panel is full or the run is long, a subpanel or service upgrade adds $1,500 to $4,000 before the charger work begins.

    A hardwired wall-mounted unit is the usual install. A 240V receptacle costs slightly less in labor but limits charger choice. Outdoor-rated installations need weatherproof enclosures and GFCI protection per NEC 625.

  3. Load management versus panel upgrade

  4. Mounting location and trenching

    Garage wall mounts are straightforward. An exterior pedestal, a detached garage, or a driveway mount across a slab may require trenching conduit at $15 to $30 per linear foot.

  5. Federal and utility incentives

    The federal 30C tax credit covers 30% of charger and installation cost up to $1,000. Many utilities rebate $200 to $500 for a permitted Level 2 install. These reduce net cost but do not change the contractor invoice.

An experienced homeowner can install a NEMA 14-50 outlet if they pull a permit and pass inspection. Hardwired chargers, subpanel work, and any service upgrade require a licensed electrician. Improper EV charger wiring is a fire risk.

Permits and inspection

An electrical permit is required in virtually every U.S. jurisdiction. The inspection verifies conductor size, GFCI or disconnect requirements, and proper bonding. Unpermitted EV charger installs are flagged in home inspections.
