What moves the price

In descending order of impact. These are also the questions worth asking a contractor whose quote sits outside the range above.

  1. Distance and access from the panel

    A circuit on the same wall as the panel costs the least. Running across a finished basement ceiling or through an attic adds fishing labor and access holes.

  2. Amperage and wire size

    A 15-amp general circuit uses 14 AWG. A 20-amp kitchen or workshop circuit uses 12 AWG. A 30-amp dryer or 50-amp range circuit uses heavier wire and a larger breaker — each step up adds material cost.

  3. Panel space

    If the panel is full, a tandem breaker may work. If not, a subpanel or panel upgrade is required before the new circuit can be added.

  4. Number of devices on the circuit

    A single dedicated outlet for one appliance is simpler than a new circuit with four receptacles and a switch leg in a finished room.

  5. Conduit versus NM cable

    Exposed garage and basement runs in conduit cost more per foot than NM-B cable in finished walls. Local code may require conduit in specific locations.

A homeowner can add a circuit if they pull a permit and pass inspection — but working inside a live panel is dangerous. Most homeowners hire an electrician for anything beyond running cable in an unfinished space. The panel connection should be done by someone qualified.

A permit is required for new circuit work in most jurisdictions. The inspection verifies wire size, breaker pairing, grounding, and AFCI/GFCI protection as applicable.
