Roofing is not a safe DIY project

Falls from a single-story roof cause serious injury. This calculator helps you plan and verify quotes — most homeowners should hire a licensed roofer.

What this assumes

  • One roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface.
  • Standard architectural shingles require 3 bundles per square; high-wind zones require 4.
  • Ridge cap coverage is approximately 35 linear feet per bundle.

Important

Roofing is dangerous work. Falls from even a single-story roof cause serious injury. Most homeowners should hire a licensed roofer — this calculator is for planning and verifying quotes.

Understanding the result

Pitch changes everything

A 1,500 square foot footprint on a 4/12 pitch is 1,581 square feet of roof — 15.8 squares. The same footprint on an 8/12 pitch is 1,803 square feet — 18 squares. Always measure roof surface, not floor area.

Waste factor by roof complexity

A simple gable roof: 10% waste. Hips and valleys: 15%. Complex cut-up roofs with dormers: 18 to 20%. Ordering short means a second delivery and color-matching risk.

Squares are how roofers price

Material and labor are quoted per square. A 20-square roof at $400 to $600 per square installed runs $8,000 to $12,000. Knowing your square count lets you sanity-check any quote.

Common questions

How many bundles of shingles per square?
Standard architectural shingles: 3 bundles per square. High-wind rated shingles in coastal zones: 4 bundles per square. Each bundle covers about 33 square feet.
How do I calculate roofing squares?
Measure the roof footprint in square feet, multiply by the pitch factor, divide by 100. A 30×40 footprint (1,200 sq ft) at 6/12 pitch (×1.118) = 1,342 sq ft = 13.4 squares.
How many squares of shingles for a 2,000 sq ft house?
Floor area is not roof area. A 2,000 sq ft ranch with a 6/12 gable roof is roughly 2,100 to 2,300 sq ft of roof surface — 21 to 23 squares. A two-story home has less roof per floor area.
How much does a square of shingles cost?
Material only: $90 to $130 per square (3 bundles at $30 to $45 each). Installed: $400 to $600 per square including tear-off, underlayment, and labor. A 20-square roof runs $8,000 to $12,000.
What is a roofing square?
One square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares. Roofers price material and labor per square — it is the standard unit in the trade.
