Field studs inside openings are not deducted

A stud that falls where a window goes still gets counted here. That is deliberate and it is how most estimators work it, because the offcut usually becomes a cripple or a piece of blocking anyway. On a wall that is mostly glass the count runs generous — cut the waste allowance if that describes your wall.

Plates assume a single bottom plate and a double top plate. Header sizing is not structural design: the linear footage here is stock length only, and the depth and ply count for a load-bearing header come from the span tables in IRC Table R602.7 or from an engineer. Fastener counts assume hand nailing at code schedule and will run higher off a coil nailer.

  • Stud count assumes one stud per spacing interval plus one, with extra studs at corners and openings.
  • Plates assume a single bottom plate and a double top plate.
  • Sheathing is calculated in 4×8 panels with a default 10% waste allowance.

Understanding the result

16 versus 24 inch on center

Sixteen inch spacing is the residential default and is required for some sheathing and siding assemblies. Twenty-four inch advanced framing uses roughly a third less lumber and leaves more room for insulation, but demands thicker sheathing and careful alignment of studs, joists and trusses.

Where the extra lumber goes

Material lists routinely come up short because corners, tee intersections, headers, cripples, sills and blocking are not part of the on-center count. Those details can add 15 to 20% to a wall's stud count on a plan with many openings.
