What moves the price
In descending order of impact. These are also the questions worth asking a contractor whose quote sits outside the range above.
Toilet model and features
A standard two-piece toilet is the baseline. One-piece, comfort-height, dual-flush, and bidet-seat models cost more in both unit price and install time.
Flange condition
A rotted or broken closet flange requires repair or replacement before the new toilet can be set — adding $100 to $300.
Floor condition
Water damage around the toilet base from a slow wax ring leak may need subfloor repair before installation.
Supply line and shutoff
A seized shutoff valve or corroded supply line is replaced during the swap. This is routine but adds $25 to $75 in parts.
Number of toilets on one visit
A plumber often charges less per toilet when replacing two or three in one trip.
Can you do it yourself?
Toilet replacement is one of the most accessible plumbing DIY tasks. You need a wax ring, supply line, and a wrench. The job takes 30 to 60 minutes. Call a plumber if the flange is damaged or the shutoff valve is seized.
Permits and inspection
When this cannot wait
- Toilet rocking on the floor — wax ring has failed
- Water pooling at the base after each flush
- Crack in the bowl or tank
- Toilet running continuously and flapper replacement did not fix it
