Line set routing moves the number

Multi-story homes, masonry walls, and long condenser-to-head runs push installs toward the high end. Get line-item quotes that specify routing path and electrical circuit size.

What this assumes

  • Prices include outdoor condenser, indoor head(s), line set, electrical circuit, and startup.
  • Complex routing through masonry or multi-story homes is priced at the high end.
  • Federal 25C credit is 30% up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pump installs.

Important

Mini-split installation requires refrigerant handling, vacuum testing, and electrical work. EPA Section 608 certification is required. Manufacturer warranties require professional installation.

Understanding the result

Each zone adds equipment and labor

A single-zone system with one head is the baseline at $3,000 to $5,500. Each additional head adds $1,500 to $3,000. A four-zone whole-home system costs three to four times a single-zone unit.

Cold-climate models cost more but heat when you need it

Cold-climate heat pumps rated to -15°F cost more than cool-only units but work in northern heating zones. Size for heating load, not just cooling.

Common questions

How much does a mini-split cost to install?
A single-zone mini-split runs $3,000 to $5,500 installed. A dual-zone system runs $5,500 to $9,000. A whole-home four-zone system runs $9,000 to $16,000.
Is a mini-split cheaper than central air?
For a single room or zone, yes. For a whole home, central is usually cheaper per ton. Mini-splits win when ductwork does not exist or when zoning individual rooms matters.
