An estimate is not a quote
What this assumes
- Ranges reflect permitted Level 2 installs by a licensed electrician in the continental U.S.
- Charger hardware ($400–$800) is included in the install price unless noted.
- Federal 30C credit is 30% up to $1,000; consult a tax professional for eligibility.
Important
A 120V outlet is not a substitute for a dedicated Level 2 circuit for daily charging. Improper EV charger wiring is a fire risk — use a licensed electrician and pull a permit.
Understanding the result
Panel capacity is the hidden cost
A 40-amp Level 2 charger needs a dedicated 240V circuit. If your panel is full or your service is 100A with heavy loads, a panel or service upgrade adds $1,500 to $4,000 before the charger work begins. A load-managed charger can avoid that upgrade on borderline panels.
Distance and trenching move the number
A garage wall mount 30 feet from the panel is the baseline. A detached garage, driveway pedestal, or exterior run across a slab adds conduit trenching at $15 to $30 per linear foot.
The federal credit reduces net cost, not the invoice
The 30C tax credit covers 30% of charger and installation cost up to $1,000. Many utilities add $200 to $500 rebates. These reduce what you pay over time but do not change what the contractor invoices today.
