How to Become a Machinist

Machinists set up and operate lathes, mills and CNC machining centers to produce parts within tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch. The trade splits between production operation and the far better-paid setup, programming and toolmaking work. Skill in CAM programming and GD&T interpretation is what separates operators from machinists.

The path, step by step
Confirm the trade actually fits you
Before anything else, test the assumption. Mostly standing, with moderate lifting of stock and fixtures. Indoors and climate-controlled compared with the building trades. Hearing and eye protection are constant requirements. Spend a day on a jobsite with someone ten years into the trade — not someone in year one — and ask what they would tell their younger self.
Meet the baseline requirements
Most programs require high school diploma or equivalent, an age of 18 or over, a valid driver's licence, and one year of high school algebra with a passing grade. Algebra is the most common blocker and the easiest to fix — one semester at a community college clears it.
Choose your training route
1–2 year machining program or a 4-year apprenticeship. A registered apprenticeship pays you from the first week and carries no tuition debt. A trade school program costs money up front but can shorten the time to a first job and is sometimes the only realistic route where apprenticeship slots are scarce.
Apply — broadly, and more than once
Apply to the union local, to non-union programs run by contractor associations, and directly to licensed contractors in the same cycle. Application windows are narrow and often annual. Competitive locals receive hundreds of applications for a handful of slots, so reapplying after improving your aptitude score is normal rather than a setback.
Work the apprenticeship
Expect 4 years for tool and die, combining paid on-the-job hours with classroom instruction. Apprentices typically start near 40–50% of journeyman scale with scheduled increases every six to twelve months, reaching 80–90% of scale by the final year.
Get licensed and pick a specialization
No license. NIMS credentials are the recognized skill standard. After licensing, pay diverges by specialization far more than by years served. The common paths are cnc setup and programming, tool and die making, mold making, swiss screw machining.
Run the numbers before you commit
What it costs to start
Through a registered apprenticeship there is no tuition, but there are real first-year costs that catch people out.
- Application and testing
- Usually $25–$75 for the application and aptitude test, where charged at all.
- Tools
- A first-year machinist tool kit typically runs several hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the trade and the tier you buy. Ask your local or employer for their required list before buying anything.
- Boots and PPE
- Budget $150–$300 for boots. Employers usually supply everything else beyond footwear.
- Transportation
- Reliable transportation is a practical requirement. Jobsites change and are rarely on a transit line.
- Classroom
- Related instruction is normally paid for by the program, though books and fees can run a few hundred dollars a year.
